Criado na zona de Harlem, Big L foi confrontado com a tentação das ruas, contudo ele escolheu o rap como saída. O seu primeiro sucesso foi em 1992 com o single "Yes you may (remix)". Desde então Big L escreveu letras como mais ninguém.

Carreira: Em 1993 ele assinou com a Columbia Records e gravou um dos álbuns mais marcantes do hip-hop underground. A música "Devil's Son" foi banida das rádios devido a rimas como "I pistol whip the priest every Sunday". Com letras hardcore feitas para os fãs e não para as rádios, Big L tornou-se um dos reis do underground.
Em 1995, ainda com a Columbia, ele gravou o seu álbum de estreia "Lifestylz Ov Da Poor & Dangerous". O álbum foi comercialmente ignorado, mas agradou à The Source que lhe deu 4mics (4 estrelas). O álbum foi um sucesso a nível underground e contou com a participação de alguns grandes nomes de agora como Jay-Z e Cam'ron. Após a gravação do álbum, a Columbia deixou Big L.
Mais tarde, juntamente com Show, AG, Buckwild, Lord Finess, Fat Joe, OC e Diamond, formou o grupo D.I.T.C (Diggin' In The Crates) onde Big L mostrava toda a sua habilidade lirical num novo nível. Concertos em Amesterdão e no Japão provaram aos outros que Big L e os D.I.T.C. estavam prontos para rebentar.Foi também nesta altura que Big L estava à beira de gravar o seu melhor trabalho "Ebonics", que também foi um grande sucesso. Contudo pouco aproveitou o seu sucesso, pois Big L foi assassinado nas ruas onde cresceu (foi baleado 7 vezes na cabeça e no peito).
Em Agosto de 2000 o álbum "The Big Picture" posterior à sua morte, foi lançado. Metade do álbum já estava completo antes da sua morte, e a outra metade foi completado depois. O álbum recebeu muito respeito em termos de vendas (sendo o seu primeiro álbum a atingir o ouro) e em termos de rotações nas rádios. O álbum conta com a participação de Guru, D.I.T.C. e de Big Daddy Kane.
Desde as suas letras inteligentes, à suas metáforas mortais e à sua habilidade no freestyling, Big L abriu as portas para uma onda de rappers como Mase, Jay-Z, Cam'ron e McGruff.
